People play online for a number of reasons. Sometimes it’s for the exercise in strategy skills, the challenge of overcoming a difficult mission, or the desire to socialize with other gamers. Teamwork has been the popular theme in online games this year. These games have earned their spot at the top of the list because they are fulfilling all the expectations of gamers in regards to the reasons listed above.
As of June, 2017, these are the top rated online games:
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft, or WoW as it’s more commonly known, was released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. It is the highest-grossing video game of all time and has earned a Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers. It has amazingly sprung to the top of “most popular lists” such as this one for 13 years! It currently has about 5.5 million players each month. It even has a movie of its own that I assume any fan would be excited to check out.
Basics of the game:
To enter the game, you have to select a server, or realm. There are 4 realm types – normal, PVP (Player versus Player), RP (Roleplay), and RP-PVP. You select and build your character. From there, much of WoW is the completion of quests which you can choose to tackle alone or in a group.
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online game developed by Valve Corporation and was released in July 2013. It has more than 800,000 simultaneous players daily. It was initially criticized for being too complex, but since has been praised for its rewarding gameplay and production quality.
Basics of the game:
It’s played in matches between two teams of five players. Each team defends their own base on the map. Each person controls a ‘hero’, or character, who has unique abilities and styles. Dota 2 allows you the opportunity to create custom maps and cosmetics too. There are even professional leagues and tournaments to join!
Overwatch was developed by Blizzard Entertainment and released in May 2016. It emphasizes teamwork and was developed with awareness of the growing popularity of multiplayer battle arenas. Since its release, it’s been recognized as an eSport with funded professional leagues and tournaments. It’s also been awarded as Game of the Year in multiple avenues.
Basics of the game
It’s a team-based, multiplayer, online, first-person shooter game. It assigns players into two teams of six. There are 24 pre-defined characters, or heroes, with unique abilities and ranks. The characters are categorized into 4 different types – offense, defense, tank, and support. Before a match begins, the teams must discuss the balance of character roles to make sure you have enough defense and offense. This necessitates communication between players to decide who should switch characters to balance the entire team’s needs.
As you probably noticed, all three of the games have a big reliance on teamwork, while still offering the option to work alone. They are all very strategic and usually quite difficult if you don’t understand the maps/arenas. But the rewards are worth the challenges, hence these games are the most popular games of 2017 so far.
